What Does Personal Growth Really Look Like?

Growth is easy to recognize when there’s something to show for it.

A better job.

A healthier body.

A growing business.

More money.

A new opportunity.

Those are the things people notice. They’re visible. They’re measurable.

But some of the most important growth in our lives happens long before there’s anything to show anyone.

And sometimes, while you’re in the middle of it, it doesn’t feel like growth at all.

Growth Happens Beneath the Surface

I recently heard entrepreneur and author Myron Golden use an analogy that stuck with me.

Think about how a tree grows.

We see the part reaching toward the sky—the trunk, the branches, the leaves. But before a tree can grow tall enough for everyone to see it, it has to establish something beneath the ground.

Roots.

That got me thinking about how often we judge our own progress by what’s visible.

We want to see results.

We want confirmation that what we’re doing is working.

We want proof that we’re headed in the right direction.

But sometimes you’re not in the season where you’re supposed to see the branches yet.

You’re growing roots.

Your Roots Don’t Get Applause

Nobody congratulates you for waking up and doing what you said you were going to do.

Nobody sees every decision you make differently because you’re trying to become a better person.

They don’t see the mistakes you learned from.

The habits you’re trying to break.

The mornings you didn’t feel like getting up.

The nights you stayed up working.

The times something failed and you quietly tried again.

And they definitely don’t see all the moments when you question whether any of it is working.

But those moments matter.

They’re building your foundation.

That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned while building Eighty-IX.

I’m building the brand.

But the brand is also building me.

I’ve had to become more disciplined. More consistent. More patient. More willing to learn. More comfortable with being uncomfortable.

And I’m nowhere near finished.

That’s growth.

Stop Waiting for Proof

One of the hardest parts about growth is believing in yourself before there’s proof.

It’s easy to believe you’re capable once you’ve accomplished something.

It’s much harder beforehand.

Before the business works.

Before the weight comes off.

Before you get the promotion.

Before anyone recognizes what you’re doing.

Before you even know if your idea is going to work.

There’s a period where the only thing you have is the belief that continuing forward will eventually take you somewhere different.

That’s where a lot of people stop.

But maybe the absence of visible results doesn’t mean nothing is happening.

Maybe you’re still growing roots.

Growth Isn’t Becoming Someone Else

There’s another misconception about personal growth that I’ve been thinking about.

We sometimes talk about becoming a “new person.”

I’m not sure that’s always the goal.

Growth isn’t becoming someone else.

It’s becoming more of who you’re capable of being.

The discipline was already possible.

The creativity was there.

The ambition was there.

The ability was there.

Growth is what happens when you start pulling those things out of yourself.

And every challenge gives you another opportunity to do it.

Every setback teaches you something.

Every lesson changes how you approach the next challenge.

Little by little, you become more capable of carrying the things you’re asking life to give you.

Keep Growing

So if you’re working toward something right now and it feels like nobody sees it, don’t let that convince you that nothing is happening.

Keep learning.

Keep challenging yourself.

Stay curious.

Stay teachable.

Stay moving.

Because eventually what’s happening beneath the surface starts showing above it.

And when that happens, people may only see the result.

You’ll know about the roots.

That’s what Crowned by Motion means to us.

The crown isn’t about arriving.

It’s about everything it took to become the person capable of getting there.

And as long as you’re breathing, there’s still room to grow.

The pursuit continues.
